met both Mr. Rooster and Mama Hen on my friends’ off the grid homestead on Stuart Island, where I spent a lot of the time during Covid lockdown. For me, being close to nature was the only way to get through this time period. And, bonding with the entire brood of hens here was simply delightful!Â
Watching the chickens interact, and, actually act as an authentic “community” was wonderful. Sure, it made me wish we in the human species would, as we all witnessed we are not now. My hope is we might begin to look to Nature more, and take notes. Especially within the realm of chicken-land. They understand community, they understand mutual respect, and each does their part to maintain unity.
I really loved their expressions, and particularly Mama Hen, who made it known she was the leader of hen brood, and Mr. Rooster strutted with his determined look, even at me, to make sure I was not a threat to his family. Once I sat down with them on the ground, and chilled, he chilled out quickly. Oh, and the chicken treats I put out helped a bit of course.
These are meant to show the differences, yet the unity of a rooster and hen, through color, contrasts..,similar compositions, yet slight variations enough to exude their individuality, yet unified for the whole of their family.
Mama Hen is 20″ x 20″ x 1.5″, Mr. Rooster 20″ x 10″ x 1.5″ Oil on canvas, painted with Natural Earth Paints and Walnut Oil, protected with archival varnish that allows for a fresh painted sheen. These are painted black on the sides, and are ready to hang or frame. Insured shipping and taxed are included in price.
